Dear Michael,

is this a V12? or is it the DB 2.6 DHC you mentioned elsewhere. If so, I will delete this input here and you can make a new post at the right place

Regards
Peter

Dear Michael,

please create a new topic (under “DB 2.6 and 3 Litre” / “For Sale”) for your car to sell and put all available details and some photos up there

Regards
Peter

now the radial ones are fitted, attached images show the former diagonal Dunlop and new radial Michelin. I only did a short test drive, runs very smooth now (because they are new and have no bumps) and steering feels more than exact. The look is ok but the diagonal tyres looked a bit nicer.

Dear Peter,

nice input, this will help me when I start a general overhaul of my V12 engine (as soon as I find time and courage to start). The domed nuts is a good idea to prevent water creeping through the threads and looks good. How do you seal the bottom? with an aluminium washer? On my engine this was not a problem so far, I have put enough sealant on the plate faces when I had removed them once but a friend?s V12 has water trickling through the threads on the waterplates.

Can you add a photo of your crankshaft to see the shrunk on ring? how did you shrink it on (assuming it cools down very fast when touching the big cold mass of the crankshaft?

I just bought one of these caps, here you can see an example http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?sg=1&pgCode=030&sgName=Electrical&pgName=Ignition&agCode=0382&agName=Distributor+Caps&pCode=417178
but I bought it from Martin Jay (distributordoctor.com) at slightly higher price (99 GBP plus VAT). He claims best quality, manufactured for him in England, it looks very good (smooth no scratches or holes from molding). I don?t know if the one from Holden is the same quality.

Laurence,

I could not find Austone in the right dimension (only the Taxi 175R16 which has to low speed limit) I did not check further a direct order in China..

So I ordered now a set of Michelin X-Stop 185R16 (210 EUR each incl VAT plus tubes) and I am curious how handling will be different.

My point on the anti roll bar was wrong, tyres only come that close when the car is lifted

Thank you Laurence for your inputs.

I also came across another aspect: width of the tyre. The Dunlop radials which are on the car now come already very close to the anti roll bar when on lock, they have 175 overall width. (may be the anti roll bar is non original?) Michelin 185R16S might be a solution, speed rating is up to 180km/h, load up to 630kg, width is 180mm and diameter is 707mm

I have looked at the taxi tyres 175R16 98/96Q | Dunlop | SP Taxi allowed for 160km/h (just a bit low, not that I will drive that fast but for the authorities). Width is 185mm and height 685mm

A very late reply but others may need it too:

here is a source for classic car screens
http://www.classic-autoglas.com/aston-martin-lagonda-3-litre-frontscheibe/1641. They quoted 471 EUR plus shipping and VAT for the front screen (not in stock, produced on demand)

My V12 de Ville has leather rear spring gaiters fitted (see photo), with modern grease nipples (not tecalemit). I also did not find a factory photo with gaiters fitted so I assume it was done by a caring owner or on special order from the factory.

By the way if you found a good supplier for something we are discussing, please give his address or email on the forum in public. I think we can assume he will agree.

Simon,

I always thought the Lagonda engines end up in the Astons but now they are missing there too..

I only can add another photo from my Lagonda DB 3ltr carbs from above (silencer removed). The Aston should look the same, it simply had no silencer but the little air filters instead.
I added a pull back spring on an arm in the middle of the two carbs because they did not go fully back in idle, maybe need a complete refurbishment later.

Burlen has the right parts for the Lagonda 3ltr. carbs
http://sucarb.co.uk/CarbEssentials.aspx?ProductId=10112
you can compare to the ones they supply for the Aston DB2
http://sucarb.co.uk/CarbEssentials.aspx?ProductId=10076
much the same but e.g. different needle

your pair with long necks are certainly not from a postwar Lagonda or Aston

Your second ones with short neck look similar to my DB 3ltr Lagonda ones but there are differences: here you see mine
http://lagondaforum.com/attachments.php?action=attachment&id=308
There was no electromagnetic enrichment device mounted on the DB Lagonda but it has a choke pulling down the main jets. This is linked between both carburettors. Length in suction direction is 5.5″
Why do you think they are from a Lagonda?

I ordered the two versions available from Holden, one is black modern plastik and has no resistor, the other is brown classical hard resin and has 5kOhm. Both have the SAE 6.3mm connector to the spark plug. The brown classical one is produced by Bremi in Germany, part no 10249N5, Bremi also have other versions

The black one is 21mm diameter and 70mm long and does not fit into the rubber cap
The brown one is 19mm diameter and 62mm long. I ground it down on lathe to 17mm diameter to fit into my rubber caps

I think new rubber caps, also available from Holden, might have solved the problem more easily, the inner diameter looks larger on the Holden homepage.

Some more usefull parts suppliers for the DB Lagonda:

gsparkplug.com have (cheaper than others):
contact breaker Lucas – DSB122C 407050 costs 6 GBP
condensor DCB121C 407044 484261 489244, costs 7.50 GBP
Voltage regulator RB106 12V Screw – Replaces NCB100 costs 22 GBP
spark plug NGK C6HSA or C7HSA 1.6 GBP
all prices +VAT

distributordoctor.com:
have rotor arm and distributor cap, a bit more expensive than Holden but claim to have better quality, might be also a good address for other distributors (even V12) and repair

Just one remark: the ski type running boards (you find pictures in Arnold Daveys books or Holthusen or others) were bent upwards on the front end (that?s why they are called so). The running boards here are bent down in a strange way.

Thank you, Julian. I saw them too but thought the diameter looks to big. I phoned Holden today and diameter is fine but length 69mm, the inside length of my cap covers is 63mm. With my next order there I will get some of them and see if I can machine away a bit from the length.
