To partially answer my own question regarding automatic change on the DB4/5/6, I note that there is a Borg Warner Slush box on eBay with all connecting parts.

This is for a floor mounted change on top of the transmission channel.

I have attached a few pictures for reference, looks tempting as well..

But still find it hard to believe that the colum change was not fitted to early DB4’s ?

I haved used Brasso sparingly on a cloth, when cleaning and polishing bakerlite fittings with no problems; also removed old adhesive as well. 😀

Have tried T-Cut but slightly to aggressive and would not recommend. 😆

Always happy to help, if you have not thrown it away, please put the damaged gear knob away safely.

I am not sure, however, that this was a “Lagonda item”, don’t forget that auto transmission was never available for any of the earlier DB Lagonda’s from 1947-58.

Which raises the quesion, were any DB4’s or DB5’s fitted with this style steering column change ? I know that the automatic was an option, but never saw too many, please do correct me if I am wrong. We, only had manual transmission AM’s at home.

I suppose the other place to look is the cars where the 3-speed B&W slush boxes were fitted in the same period, with steering column change. A few cars spring to mind such as the Jaguar Mk 9 and 10, related Daimlers, Rover P5, Alvis TD-TF21, Rootes Company, BMC, AMC etc amongst others. I will take a look and see what I find…..

ASD are always helpful, and I am pleasantly surprised by the number of small and obscure parts that they still hold.

Interesting point, my bakerlite gear shift knobs on my 1950’s dhc’s are both still perfect and useable; same I suspect on my Rapide.

You are no doubt correct that A.D. or a sharp knock or similar can start the break-up of these very early polymers; and of course excessive heat, which over time makes them brittle; and of course vibration.

They can be repaired of course, I have done this with a few items, such as the horn-push which is prone to cracking and fracture on the DB car’s, and with care, one can make invisible repairs. So if you have you have not disposed of it, please pm me and I will see if I can repair it for you.

A final point to consider, where did they source it from? This was another bought in component, which costs a few pounds. Given the love of the column change on Rootes cars, Hillman Minx and Humber Sceptre etc etc, these are a possible place to start….

David – Mine has seen just over 16k of use, so barely worn in.

I look forward to getting to the point, when I have to worry about replacement, due to lots of use.

    Enjoy…..

I knew this conversation on the forum would jog my memory.

Guy – the previous owner of 129, had tidied up his under dash switches, and the effect is much neater, with the extra under panel now removed.

Also note that the under-dash trim has been restored, originally I believe it was an off-tan color, but the black is far more suitable.

When I finally get round to that stage, I think I may well follow this route.

Could you please post this as a new item, so it can be found by others more easily

    Thank you

If you find any more treasures, would love to hear about them ?

Before I forget, did you bid on the collection of Lagonda material at the Bonham’s AM auction? (there was a rare full electric circuit diagram in the lot)

    1. Tim- sorry, won’t be posting pictures until the car is finished.

    2. David – to answer your question, the answer is yes; and as you are no doubt aware, engine rebuild has also taken place. So it should be a very nice car when completed.

I suspect that your fog lamps were removed at some stage, like mine were.

My car also has the two fog lamp switches and current redundant wiring to both front wings, and of course f/bumper attachments.

    On my car:

3 switches etc under dash ? knurled knob is radio balance (front/rear), push button on right is to open the fuel filler cap. Middle switch is for the heated rear window, but appears to be non standard fitment.

A very old picture attached for information, hope this helps.

Love your factory tool, looks to be in super condition.

May I assume part of the TVJL reference collection ?

I should have added in my original posting, that ?180k is in the owners pocket, not the full price including Bonham’s broker fees…

Like nearly everything from the David Brown era, these are the cars that people want, and to a paraphrase a quote from a gentleman on this forum, written elsewhere: “If you want a Rapide the boat may well be close to departure..” I think it is departing personally, and yes I do watch what you write with interest, may not agree with all of it of course…

    If you haven’t purchased, well……

Before I forget, 153 should be in new paint any day now, lots of horrors uncovered on the way of course.

I was surprised that this car did not sell, when offered a second time, at a reduced price.

I was given a spare set of these horn shaped door pins for my Rapide, source was interesting. The flutes are all identical, so have a perfect set for the car now which is pleasing.

A Hillman Minx (series 5), which was being broken for parts.

If I am correct the Rootes Car group owned both Hillman, Humber, Singer and Sunbeam amongst other makes. So no doubt other sources from within this group as well.

There are now lots of new pictures of the car on the Bonham’s web-site.

I hope this time, the car makes it to auction under its own steam and with the original tank and fuel links now all cleared.

Will be interesting to see what it makes at auction, prices for the 2.6 dhc’s do seem to cover the full spectrum.
