I’ve made contact with a firm who produce low volume injection mouldings, they are going to copy the lock pin in black plastic.
Plunkett Associates (See here) will give me a unit price once they have dimensioned off the original.
I think the aluminium option would be too complicated and expensive due to the internal thread and the fact that it would have to be machined. Would those who need this part be happy with a like for like in plastic?
If you are interested please let me know so I can estimate how many to get made – I’m thinking that 50 is probably a minium run. All to be confimred.
SRD13 November 2012 at 18:26 #49842Christian, please put me down for 6 please, subject to price.
Mine are all good, but i suspect once they see some use, they won’t stand up to much.
and no I don’t have a stretch Rapide….
David13 November 2012 at 20:00 #49843Stretch Rapide – what a great idea! A couple of us thought a while ago about a soft top version when there were a some unloved cars around, create something like a Lincoln Continental convertible (as in Kennedy & Dallas) but it came to nothing of course
Guy Vinall20 November 2012 at 16:47 #49857Christian, sorry I’ve been away for a few days. Put me down for 6 plastic pulls please!
Cured the fuel smells at long last. Re-routed tank breathers etc & put a different pressured fuel pump on along with new heat shrinking fuel pipes & banjos.
Bespoke exhaust system going on in a fortnight.

Guy.Christian21 November 2012 at 17:17 #49858I’ve just had the quote back for a run of 50 and it’s not cheap (well that’s no suprise!). Cost is ?455 so ?9.10 each…is that totally out of the question?
Guy Vinall21 November 2012 at 17:45 #49859Hello Christian,
On the surface of it this would at first appear to be expensive! However the other side of the coin suggests otherwise. A short run of bespoke items that are impossible to get from another sauce or car! I have been to all sorts of auto jumbles & showed the originals to many with no success! Presumable these will be drilled out to receive the threaded rod end & polished? If too hard, splitting may be a problem that existed on the originals. I would suggest that the hole should only be a marginally smaller than the rod & malleable glue used! I’m still keen for 6 please! Just out of interest, a similar item made from alloy would be about ?25 each.

GuyChristian21 November 2012 at 18:49 #49862Hi Guy, thanks for your input on this matter. I believe the thread is cut by the metal shaft as it’s screwed on, the hole is slightly oversized so this would work on the softer plastic. The finish would be as original – black plastic…
SRD22 November 2012 at 13:08 #49865Thats fine for 6 lock buttons for me please.
Now, I can stop looking for them. Although I imagine, a source will turn up once they are all made….
Many thanks for this initiative, it is greatly appreciated.
SRD23 January 2013 at 11:55 #49977By chance, I have finally found the source of these door pins/pulls. A friend had a Humber Sceptre parked outside his house, and I went to see it…….
They were used on the Humber Sceptre Mk 1, made from 1961 – 1967 and the early Hillman Hunter which shares many parts with the car; the Ford Cortina Mk 1 made from 1962 – 1967, and maybe other 1960’s Fords.
On the Humber they are the same dimensions as on the Rapide, whilst on the Fords, they are 5 mm longer, so can be easily cut to size. The door pulls on the Fords are in black and also a silver finish plastic.
I picked up a good set of four, on eBay, see the following link:

Christian23 January 2013 at 23:34 #49979Good find! I have to confess that I bid on them too having bought a set before Christmas from a person who was breaking a Sceptre. Some have slightly sharper flute edges as well, I think these tend to be earlier ones. A lawyer I work with remembered seeing these lock pins on a car when he was a boy, eventually he remembered exactly what car – amazing!
SRD4 September 2013 at 08:05 #50343I was given a spare set of these horn shaped door pins for my Rapide, source was interesting. The flutes are all identical, so have a perfect set for the car now which is pleasing.
A Hillman Minx (series 5), which was being broken for parts.
If I am correct the Rootes Car group owned both Hillman, Humber, Singer and Sunbeam amongst other makes. So no doubt other sources from within this group as well.
Christian4 September 2013 at 09:53 #50345There are quite a few similarities between the Rapide and Humber Imperial / Super snipe…

I’m now after the chrome surrounds which go at the base of the lock pins…
