I also have a lovely V12 razor edge saloon – mechanically perfect but needing body tidying and painting. Mine is by Freestone and Webb – who is the coachbuilder of yours?

I recollect from Arnold Davey’s book that the earliest V12 cars had side slit louvres on the bonnet, but due to overheating problems a factory mod (when the car was returned to the factory for action on the overheating issues!) was to cut these grilles into each bonnet side and fit an underbonnet aluminium cowling which mated with it and hence extracted much of the exhaust heat. My V12 saloon has grilles exactly like Peter’s photo whereas my V12 Drophead has slits like those on an M45. Both are very early Sanction 1 cars.

    Simon,

Like many others I read these forums without making much comment. This looks like a nice car (unsold) but your original description… “This example with one owner for the last 58 years” is incorrect – the auction catalogue says “Dating from 1937, this particular example entered the current ownership some fifty-eight years later” – ie in 1995, so the vendor has owned the car for 17 years. Not sure why the auction house would use such a roundabout description as I am sure they would not want to confuse potential purchasers.

What do you think of the colour of the wire wheels?

    Peter,

I have two V12 cars, both sanction 1 and therefore early. They both have the same spare wheel mounting as your photographs. So from this information you can conclude that yours is the standard fixing for the earlier cars.

I have one that may be suitable that you could borrow although as you know they are very heavy so depending on where you are the transporting of it would be costly. send me a PM with your address etc

    Ha! Julian says here..
“In short, just like most pre-war manufacturers, Lagonda would supply anything the customer wanted if he was happy to pay! ”
and on the other discussion about modifications to engines he says almost the same about LMB,
“we as a company are led by our customers / fellow enthusiasts, we do not create things that nobody wants, we do as we are asked! and when asked by enough people we undertake projects like this one”.
so the blood line of Lagonda obviously runs through Julian!

just one more thing – in Arnold Davey’s book at page 42 you will see a detailed explanation of the engine numbering “system”. This explains why there is a car number, an ID plate engine number, an M45/xxx number and a separate Meadows number. As only 345 of these cars were manufactured, this is a pleasingly complex numbering mess!

The number mentioned in your posting, next to the oil filler on offside of the timing case is the Lagonda number, ie the M45/xxx.

The Meadows number is on the offside of the flywheel housing (next to engine mount on mine) and mine is a 4 digit.

Do you want me to post a photograph of mine?

I have just looked at my M45 and it just has a small filled hole there, presumably where the threaded stud has been removed from

    Barry,
I use it for hanging an air freshener, or some of those lucky furry dice.
Will have a look under my M45 and see if I have a similar thingy with anything attached

    Julian,
on other discussion boards there is criticism that using Thermotec can retain too much heat in the manifolds and cause them to overheat/crack. Have you ever had this experience?

Like most V12 owners I am looking for any way of keeping the driver and passengers cooler (ie not just the car’s engine!) especially in warmer weather when the passenger compartment heats up even with the roof down

here are photos of tools in mine – the leather holder is original but I think that the tools are not.

I bought other tools suitable for Lagonda from http://www.baconsdozen.co.uk/tools/spanners.htm

This is V12 and I don’t know whether LG had same layout and same toolkit.

photos are too big for the forum so will send direct
