    Thanks Laurence.

That would be the obvious way it worked but there doesn’t seem to be a gap in the pinch area to close up on tightening the “locking bolt”. I will try some freeing oil as you suggest and see if it will move by gently tapping. I’m trying to avoid removing the assembly as one of the back bolts is difficult to get a spanner on.

Some useful information on painting here: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/body-filler.htm
Click on the link at the bottom of the page for subsequent painting stages.
Important to get all that old filler off first.

I imagine there are cracks in the corners because there is stress there? Welding would be the best solution.

    Hi Peter,

What you have is the remains of the stone guards. These would have originally been under all 4 wings to protect from stone impacts.

Not sure how they go on a V12 but on an LG45 the front ones are fixed just in front of the wheel well one end and to the main wing bracket at the front. On the rear wings they go from front to back.

Basically they are a frame of approx 3/16″ rod with a woven wire mesh with holes about 1/4″.

    Hope this helps

    Dear Bill,

I didn’t notice the post continued past the bottom of the first page. Me being dumb. I will study that for now and may come back to you and take you up on your kind offer.

Thanks Bill for your response. I had seen that post on the G9. Julian’s advice seems to about the internals of the gearbox, or am I looking at the wrong post?

I am intrigued by your spirit level tool. Perhaps you can describe what you did?

Well I say “Forty Five”. I know some say “Four Five”.

I’ve never know which is right, or whether there is a right.

    Hi Alec,
My car isn’t a 16/80 but the bush is probably the same type of silentbloc bush. Basically two metal tubes (a smaller, bolt diameter, tube within a larger tube) with rubber infill. So the bolt is binding on the inner tube of the bush.
Hope this helps. No doubt someone with 16/80 knowledge can confirm this.

I don’t doubt Rod Jolley could “restore” a wreck. A bit like the proverbial broom you’ve had for thirty years . . . but you have replaced the head 10 times and the handle 6 times. Not the same broom anymore. With enough money you can remake practically anything. Does an id plate and the original steering wheel make it the same car? Read a few articles in “Automobile” magazine and it is amazing what can be resurrected. Most cars, of any make, that need a major restoration would, I imagine, cost more to restore by a specialist than they could be sold for when finished?

There are some fairly hideous original bodies on Rolls Royces. Should one care about throwing away the body of those when rotten? Lagondas mainly have factory bodies I believe, so don’t suffer the problem of ugly bodies.

The LG45 saloon I mentioned in a previous post appears to have deep pitting in most of the chassis components from the photographs I have seen. I doubt that will ever be restored. A shame, but who is going to throw time and a lot of money at finding and replacing a lot of parts, possibly including the chassis. I imagine the engine is savable.

    Colin,

I don’t know. I’m only repeating what I was told. Not seen the car myself, only photos.

The saloon I mentioned is another early one, 12007. I’m told has a M45 engine though.
