    Hi Laurence,

I think you’re right. I was comparing it to a modern hard rubber cased battery which of course would be made from an entirely different material.

    I looked up Vulcanite:
In 1839 Charles Goodyear discovered the method of mixing sulphur with rubber to form hardened or vulcanised rubber, called Vulcanite. The proportion of sulphur can be increased or decreased in order to vary the required amount of hardening accordingly. Between 25-50% sulphur gives a hard product with the familiar feel of plastic. . . . Vulcanite could be produced in almost any colour, although the predominant colours are black (ebonite) and brown. . . . Vulcanite is a thermoset material which, after moulding becomes brittle and cannot be remoulded.

I will do some experiments colouring plastic filler. I have some black pigment powder for colouring cement which hopefully will do the job. Soot is hard to come by these days. . . .

    Hi Laurence,

Ebay – they come up occasionally.
I don’t think they’re hard rubber. I have a pair of hard rubber batteries and they don’t feel like that at all. They have a very hard surface. If you tap the covers they sound like a pottery flower pot sounds and I suspect if I hit one with a hammer it would break as a flower pot would. I have been told they do shatter. Not going to try it. . . .

    Hi David,

    Not a part that I recognise. . . .

    Hi Laurence,
I think you’re right about the Lagonda factory numbers – my wheels are the same number as yours, Z4101/2.

    Hi David,

That’s the battery I have been looking at and thinking of getting.
Good to have you confirm that it would be a good choice.

    Thanks
    David

    Hi Laurence,
I was wishing I had the Holthausen book, but I don’t and you can’t get one for a reasonable price. copies of the photos would be appreciated.

    Hi Laurence,
I was imagining the battery was held down and the cover was not included in that (so the fixing is not visible) – cover screwed on after.
The battery sits in a tray that has a lip of about 3/4 inch so can’t see the battery could move. The tray is bolted down. We’ll probably never know. . . .

    Hi Laurence,
The remnants of leather look original although seems unlikely as a fixing. They are front and back of the battery riveted to the battery tray at the base of where the battery sits. Can’t see they could have held tools etc down there?

    Hi Laurence,

I didn’t get your email but sounds interesting. Perhaps you could send again?
Photo from The Autocar (April 10th 1936) shows the batteries in an LG45 with battery covers which look the same as the other photo of a period battery ad.
The battery tray of my LG45 had the remains of a leather strap riveted to it one end, presumably to hold the battery down in some way.

    Cold cranking amps (CCA).
Most of the ones I’ve been looking at don’t quote CCA and those that do are much lower 395 to 450. I did find one that quoted 360 with the comment: “This battery incorporates High Cranking Amps (CCA) for superior starting power”.

The highest I can find is 500 but that is a 12 volt battery and enormous.

    Hi Laurence,

Many thanks. The original batteries according to the build sheet were Z4166 Lucas Twin. Spec now unknown?
Maximum space that the battery tray will allow is 230 x 173 x 190 mm high. The height of 190 mm is to the top of the body to allow room for a cover. Any higher would hit the underside of the bonnet. I will probably go with the 71Ah battery. Need to check if the quoted height includes the terminals, presumably it does.

    Hi David,

    Just a thought.
For my LG45 I made two trolleys but it does remain on it for long periods of time. I made separate front and back units with a pair of heavy duty castors on each (750kg rating each castor if I remember correctly). Made out of heavy box section steel and bolted together with 10mm bolts. The chassis sits on the trolley and bolted on to the chassis in a couple of places so keep it rigid (using existing bolts). The advantage of a DIY job is you can make it as high as you like. Works very well and can be easily pushed around. Nothing is welded so no fear of less than perfect welds giving way. Feels very solid.
You can take it apart when not needed. All the vertical pieces sit on a cross piece so none of the bolts are holding the weight. Would probably take 2 hours or so to assemble and sit the car on it, maybe less.

    Hi David,

I don’t think I fancy getting under that. It only has a lift of 660mm too.

Short of a 4 post lift which I assume you wouldn’t have room for what about some good old axle stands? MachineMart do some with a 870mm lift and 12 tonne capacity per pair.

    Hi Laurence,
Thanks for your reply. I have found a light box that I have repaired and is usable. It’s the surrounding panel that is the problem. I suppose I could invent what is behind and unseen but thought I’d first try and get it how it was originally. I’d prefer to have it correct if possible.
