Interesting that this Alvis originally a saloon sold for ?94,000 and the Lagonda an original “restored” drophead didn’t sell.

The pdf has the same pix. You do need to click on “Further Photos” but if Julian has seen the open boot pic he already has.

    Hi Simon,

I have to say I much prefer the shape of the LG45 compared to the LG6. A personal preference. I have seen quite a few LG45s at auctions (mainly DHCs) and a lot of them, probably most, leave a lot to be desired. Many of the “restored” ones have bits missing and the panel work not good. Others with dropped doors – probably due to rotten hinge posts. The exposed bottom end rots from the bottom up. Expensive to replace the post. Even the one in tomorrow’s auction (H and H 24-5-12) doesn’t look that good in the engine bay for a restored car. It also has a central gear lever and a driver’s seat from a right gear change car. Perhaps I’m just fussy. Give me an unrestored one full of woodworm any day. . . .

Assuming the plate is on the bulkhead the body type is stamped on the plate – at least it is for an LG45.

I think you may be right about saloon origins. The windscreen frame isn’t right for a drophead or a saloon. It should be a gentle curve at the top for both and much thinner side posts for the DHC.

    Hi Colin,

I used to work in South Ken and I spent many a sunny lunchtime taking in the sights. Dan Margulies often had some gorgeous car or maybe two outside in the mews and more visible through the open doors. Those garages are bigger than you’d think from the outside. And Coys were just a bit further up the road at that time in Queen’s Gate Mews. All alas beyond my budget.

    Hi Colin,

If my memory serves me right Dan Margulies (classic car dealer) used to be in Queen’s Gate Place Mews. Perhaps it passed through their hands at some point and the photos are from then? Those white doors could well be where they were.

I would imagine there is the ash frame under the area forming the opening for the sun roof? In fact he mentions gluing it to the wooden frame. If this is the case it wouldn’t be possible to get any aluminium behind. Unless there is steel edging underneath there probably isn’t any corrosion? If there is corrosion I would cut it out back to sound metal and TIG or MIG a patch in. Gas welding will probably burn the ash excessively.

Now that drophead looks a nice car. The converted saloon looks pretty dreadful IMHO. I think it would be better to build the chopped car back into a saloon as original. Obviously the price would need to allow for this.

    Hi Laurence,

Unfortunately no, the back “half” is about 3 inches more than the front.

    Stephen,

Thanks for the offer of a photo. I have now got it out so mission accomplished.

The pinch bolt had come out easily in situ. I decided to take the whole fan unit out (I think it would be very difficult without removing it) and squirted release oil down round the shaft and pinch tube and left it to work its way in. I turned it occasionally so it ran down from both ends. It penetrated surprisingly well. I then tapped along the join line of the pinch tube by inserting a small screwdiver in from the top gently tapping around the join**. The bottom half then dropped out. The other half was easier as I had a flat surface to push against once half the tube was out.

The shaft was still solid but careful use of heat round the aluminium casting and tapping a bar inserted in the “adjustment holes” to rotate the shaft and it eventually loosened. I had to heat it several times.

**Avoid the area near the shaft. The tapered edge is very thin and will damage easily.

    Hello Chris,

Many thanks Chris. If you do find the article let me know which and I’ll stop looking myself. I have them back to the late 70s plus a few before so quite a few to look through.

    Hello Chris,

Thanks for your response. It does sound similar but alas there is nowhere to put even a screwdriver in to lever out the housing so levering out doesn’t seem an option. I’ll send you a PM if I would like to take advantage of your kind offer of the photocopy.

I think it’s going to be a major problem to get these out so I may give up and hope the oil doesn’t leak out when I refill it. Why do these descriptions of the method always seem so straightforward. May have worked when the cars were new but have the writers ever tried it 75 years on, one wonders?

There is also a tiny bit of play in the hub (on rotation, not in and out) which probably needs locating and rectifying.

I have a feeling there may be some article in an old Club magazine on the subject of half shaft removal, but which one?

No luck yet. Presumably the steel sleeve is in 2 halves. One comes out the top the other half out the bottom? And somehow clamps the fan shaft in the middle. Didn’t make it easy, did they. . . .

    Stephen.

Thanks for your help. I took the clamping bolt out. On the underside I can see a metal ring – from my limited view it looks like a washer. Is this the clamp I need to loosen somehow? If not I’m still puzzled.
