Well spotted, and there was me thinking only the Americans did this to cars. I

I would tend to agree that the car might be an LG45 dhc, but what a bill faces any future purchaser of this or any of the cars.

Spotted yet another Facel Vega HK500 in there, several gorgeous pre-war Delahayes, numerous French pre-war cars and even an Edwardian or two.. The Ferrari 250GT will clearly fly out of the door, as well the Maserati A6G 2000.

Unlike many barn find collections, this one is the real McCoy and I expect that effect will knock the price up, that is of course, if the bubble hasn’t burst by then …….

Please can you post some pictures of your car on the forum, so we can see how it looks today.

    Thank you

    Thank you for your reply.

The 3.0 production actually started much earlier with a batch of 16 cars from chassis LAG/50/461. These are known as “Brooklands” 2.6/3.0 litre cars. All were originally fitted with the 2.6 litre engine, and when the 3.0 litre became available in 1954, many had their engines changed by the works.

These cars derive from 16 chassis’s that Brooklands purchased from AML and had Tickford make and fitted the new bodies on them

See the following web-site for ample details on these cars, and a set of pages devoted to the 3.0 litre cars:

    http://www.db-lagonda.com/30-litre-cars

The first Mk1 cars start at chassis LAG/50/532, which still exists

The Aston Service details are incorrect.

So your car is a Mk1 Sports Saloon or Coupe. These are rare and have a very nice shape and look and are also highly desirable.

A super red Coupe is shown :

    http://www.db-lagonda.com/30-mk-1-coupe/

this should give you idea of what they can look like.

The club database will be updated with these details.

    Thank you for the reply.

Tony – I* would suggest around or even a tad more than your higher figure of $30k US for a good 3.0 litre engine which turns over by hand; these are very hard to find, and better still with all ancillaries, including exhaust manifolds and carbs etc.

A rebuilt engine is a different financial proposition, and they hit the market very rarely, and I would guess snapped up the DB2 folks.

However, in the scheme of things the 3.0 2-door Coupes and dhc’s are the cars everyone wants, and they are now commanding very strong money for cars in top condition with correct engine and box.

Thanks for letting us know about your car, this is the first LB290 car after the LAG/50 series finished and a very early 3.0 dhc or Coupe. It was last recorded in the New York area in 1979, presumably complete.

Do you have any further information or pictures you could email me privately for the club records. I have recorded below the details, including original registration number.

The car was originally fitted with a 3.0 VB6J engine and of course a 4-speed DB gearbox.

    Kind regards

    Simon

    Stewart,

I had seen the car and been informed of its history.

Contacting the club is always a good starting point.

This car sold well, given that there are a few known problems, at ?35k with b.p.

However, it at least gives some market guide for these 2.6 dhc’s at auction in reasonable condition.

It was clear that the car was going to sell with such a low reserve, it just depended on how much the two buyers bidding want to buy a V12, and someone paid ca. ?88k.

Perhaps they know something we don’t ?

David – I am inclined to agree, but I do find the Rapide grows on you with time ….

    Tony hi

If you PM me, I will give you email and contact details of a friend with a 3.0 dhc who has done over 220,000 miles in his car (40 plus years of ownership). he is the best person to speak / email with about tyre choices imo.

Why do you think that ?

Have you inspected or driven the car in the last year ?

Estimate is more sensible as well at ?60-80k, meaning there is a stronger possibility it might actually sell this time round..

    Tony I

Thanks for the kind words – this web-site is just a small start, long way to go, but lots of ground-work completed.

I know the total of the Mk 2 dhc’s seem to be a real floating variable. Not helped by the factory selling cars as late as LB290/1/220 as a Mk 1 car (last car was around LB290/1/265…

I plan to sit with Arnold and the factory records during the winter months and make good sense of it all !

A fellow club member has kindly copied all of the factory and Arnold’s records for me. if things pan out well, I would like to make some suitable bar-graphs to show sales of different models etc..

The conversion from Column change to floor shift is very common it seems from LB290/1/82 through to around 105. Sometimes, you still see evidence of the column change bracket attached to the steering column, even when converted over. My second dhc had that bracket still in place when first purchased.

The pictures of your car look splendid, Circassian Blue with tan hood.

Curious how you can run with UK plate to front and local registration plate to back ?

I am delighted to hear that you are putting in so many miles in the car, sounds like you had great weather over there ?

The first detailed section on an early Brooklands 3.0 dhc is now complete, words and pictures.

    Please see:

http://www.db-lagonda.com/30-dhc-resto and the next two sub-pages.

The next resto car I will feature, was discovered as a hulk with engine/box long gone, back in the 1990’s with a host of similarly abused DB-Lagondas in a farmers yard, field and barn..

This car sold well given its seemingly poor condition at ?9000 +BP, making it around ?10,500 with all charges. Broadly inline with the complete but grotty 3.0 litre saloon at Bonham’s Oxford towards the end of last year.

This might suggest that these complete project cars are finally on the way up or that there is still strong demand for the 3.0 engine/boxes. I hope that it is the former, the Coupes have very sporting lines and look very elegant.
