I’ve never understood why there are so many different profiles of windscreen rubber when they all do virtually the same job. Why?
Not only do the profiles vary (a lot) but the rubber hardness and flexibility also varies making the job downright unpleasant.
David Bracey18 April 2016 at 12:23 #51870I’ve come to accept that these Lagonda’s are like petulant children. When thing’s aren’t going exactly as they want they protest in the strongest terms. Not always proportional to the problem!

Could you post a photo of your damaged gasket?
Have you discovered the cause of the air/gases getting into your water? I’ve just developed similar problems. Yet to start stripping down and doing a compression test although no power loss.

An update on my own situation.
Fortunately I don’t have any significant problem but it’s worth sharing. The only problem I appear to have had has been that the radiator cap wasn’t effecting a seal. What I experienced was frothing water/anti-freeze splurting out of the cap and being thrown onto my windscreen. I was concerned about what was causing it to froth up and suspected water pump cavitation caused by a restriction on the suction line from the radiator or air being sucked in somewhere. No such problem could be found. Several experiments mixing up anti-freeze and water in buckets with a food blender showed that they will froth up through normal mixing. Sorting out the radiator cap alone appears to have solved this problem. I did 150 miles at about 60-65mph on Saturday and neither the car or I suffered any ill-effects.

David Bracey16 March 2016 at 20:52 #51828Bill, I’m not sure how the spacers would work. The springs fit below the axle so spacers would lower the car even further. Could you explain?
David Bracey16 March 2016 at 13:58 #51825As it’s now Spring…. I thought I should provide a brief update on my springs. (Sorry..)
All 4 spring sets have been cleaned up and load tested by Jones and the results are interesting: –
LH Rear 240lbs
RH Rear 200lbs
LH Front 360lbs
RH Front 280lbsHardly surprising we had a lopsided car!
With the car on stands we can also see that the body is slightly unlevel on the chassis so I have decided to have the springs back as they are and refit them on the opposite sides. That must improve things but if not then we will start to swap leaves about and try and get them evened up. I’m not resetting the body on the chassis!
David Bracey14 March 2016 at 02:31 #51820Bil, my boot key is an FS 0914 so I’m not sure if the lock was changed or whether it just happens to work with the original lock. I’m happy to post it to you to try.
David Bracey6 March 2016 at 16:16 #51802Thanks to everyone that has contributed to this. It seems as if Lagonda leaf springs are as much of a black art as everything else Lagonda related. It is such a lot of work to keep removing springs and trying things out and my engineering brain doesn’t like trial and error. I like to understand a problem then find a solution. All very frustrating but at least I am glad that I didn’t either work at Lagonda in the 1930’s or be a customer of theirs. I suspect I would have ended up killing someone!
David Bracey6 March 2016 at 15:08 #51801Thanks everyone, that is very helpful.
Over the summer I’ll make a couple and see how they look. I think I’ll probably cover them in the trim leather and line them with matching headlining. I’ll buy a couple of the cheapest period cases I can find on eBay to copy for catches and hinges etc.
If anyone is bidding on any please let me know so that I don’t bid against you. I’m not in a rush with this.
Thanks again,
David
David Bracey6 March 2016 at 08:41 #51789Thanks Colin,
The photos help a lot. The prices….! They must be joking.
So, it seems as if the correct luggage would have been black and probably out sourced rather than manufactured by Lagonda. As I’m unlikely to find the precise period cases I am tempted to make something a bit more swanky. Something to ponder.

David Bracey22 February 2016 at 22:24 #51764I’ve been running my car with a conical Gano filter for the last year and not had any problems. http://www.ganofilters.com
Just in case it is of interest.
David Bracey13 February 2016 at 17:48 #51749I’m not sure about that Rich. I suspect there are more handbooks left than cars. Could be wrong so will be interested to see what more enlightened members think.
David Bracey10 February 2016 at 18:34 #51742Thanks Bill. B99 did sound a bit vague about it. He wwas also suggesting possibly cutting and welding LR track rod tubes onto the Lagonda ones. I’m not doing that!
