    David
Thanks very much for that. I think I have the early LG engine mounting so unfortunately that does not seem to be my problem – unless any one else has any suggestions.

Julian, Thanks very much for that. Never heard of these spring damper engine mountings. I have had a very close look at mine again and they appear to be a conventional silentbloc type secured by 4 bolts – with a very large vertical bolt through the centre securing the engine mounting itself. Is this the type you are referring to ? If they are presumably it is just a question of making certain that the large vertical bolt is tight – or is there something I have missed ?
Nothing in the Revised Handbook !!
Sorry to everyone that this topic should have been under LG45 not V12. Dont know how this happened. Is it possible that the Moderator could move it as I dont know how !!
    Many thanks.

    Hi Petemick and H14,
    Just picked up your replies.
Thanks very much for the information. Very interesting.
I had no idea W.O actually fitted a Cotal gearbox before the war. It will make the car fantastic to drive I am sure. What size is it as a matter of interest ? I believe that the Mark 35 was the largest used by Delahaye for the road although the Mark 38 was used for racing.
I recently chased up a Cotal gearbox fitted to a postwar Lagonda which the owner did not intend to use. It was very different to the pre war ones and I think it was designed by Cotal specifically for the Lagonda. I turned it down when I realised that it had no reverse gear as that was in the back axle !! However it was beautifully made and appeared very robust.

    Hi Peter
Very interested in your photos – although not able to help you I fear.
Is that a Cotal gearbox switch in front of your instruments ??
What is it used for ? Do you have a Cotal gearbox ??
I need the inside block for a Cotal switch (not for my Lagonda I hasten to add but for a Delahaye).
For some time I have been trying to locate someone in France who I understand holds a lot of new spares for Cotal but I have been unsucessful. Can you help me ?
I know that W.O.Bentley experimented with a Cotal gearbox postwar but did not know anything was fitted prewar. Would be very interested to know more if you feel like posting it !
    Thanks.

    Hi
Why not try fitting the left spring on the right and the right on the left. There may be other quirks on your car “measurement wise” which means that this may be a more acceptable solution for the front bumper. Did you mark the springs before you sent them away to be retempered so that you know which was right and which was left originally ?
Hope this might help but perhaps you have thought of this one already !!
    Best of luck

    Dear David
Alignment details from Julian are on page 3 of the G9 gearbox post.
There is rather a lot of detail about my alignment method but If you dont mind sending me your telephone number by private message I am happy to telephone you and tell you all I know !!! I also found that it is quite important how you assemble the shaft(s) and fibre discs between the engine and gearbox. I spent hours assembling and disassembling the shaft – in between I was running it up in my lathe and observing the differences !!!

    Dear David LG45
If you have not looked already there is some good advice from Julian on the post that I started entitled “G9 gearbox”.
I must admit that I have no experience with the G10 gearbox but I would have thought that the principles for aligning it are the same as for the G9. In the end I made up a special tool to double check my basic lining up with a spirit level. This seems to be ok (famous last words !!).
    Best of luck.

Try the Green Spark Plug Co for new ones or they may be able to suggest someone. The caps are readily available as I used to want one myself and then saw them all over the place at autojumbles etc !!
    Best of luck !

    Hello,
May be able to help although it may be the wrong type !!
I saw what I think was a spare wheel mounting for the V12 at Beaulieu last weekend. I think it was on Mel Cranmer’s stand. Underneath the table!!
    Try him.
    Best of luck !!

    Hello Julian
Only just picked up your reply about the vibration. Many thanks.
I am mystified as I made up a shaft which went from the inside of the flwheel bush to the centre of the gearbox input shaft (the shaft was pointed at this end and nudged inside the centre of the input shaft). The diameter of the shaft was a nice fit inside the centre of the thrust bearing in the centre of the clutch. I then trued up the gearbox top face with a spirit level – having first of all made certain that the engine was completely horizontal to the ground.
I will have to go back and check everything all over again – unless of course I have missed something with my system………!!
    Many thanks again.

Julian knows far more than me on the subject but I modified my M45 so that the cooling was exactly as on the 3 litre i.e. I blanked off the 2 holes on the side of the engine which took water from the pump then I extended the casting from the pump so that it blew straight into the back of the head. There was no transfer port from the block to the head at the back or the front. This is exactly what is done on the 3 litre.
I never had any problems with this system.
    Any comments ?

    Dear Julian
Many thanks with the information about the total G9 internals.
Yes, it is a very painful cost but at least we all know there is a complete solution. That was not the case 20 -25 years ago ! Thank you LMB.
Did over 100 miles yesterday in the Lagonda with no problems from the gearbox -touch wood ! However only time will really tell.
However now I have a vibration which wasnt there before! It is the engine/clutch/shaft not gearbox or propshaft. I lined up the gearbox extremely carefully to the engine so I am a little mystified. Will have to investigate further …..
    Many thanks again.

    Dear Julian
Just a further post with regard to Colin’s post about your complete gearbox internals for a T8 gearbox.
I agree that seems a very fair price particularly bearing in mind that everything will presumably match everything else.
Just in case my gearbox rebuild goes horribly wrong do you do a complete set of internals for the G9 and how much does that work out landed in the UK ? What exactly is included in that “kit”.
Is everything finished to go straight into the casing or is further honing/reaming required ?
Many thanks again for your help

Just a final word on the G9 if anyone else is tempted to rebuild theirs. Mine is now back together but I have only done one short trip so far. Everything works fine but only time will tell !!
However, I cannot stress how important I think it is to clean out the oilways in the gears. I dont think there is much point in rebuilding the gearbox if you do not do this. Second gear is quite easy once you have pushed the bush out. However 3rd and 4th are much more of a challenge as the actual double helical gear itself must be pushed off the steel syncro “housing” (for want of a better word). Each gear is on 2 keyways and you will need 2 hardened steel pins to assist in pushing it off (and a hydraulic press). This was very very difficult but it is only by getting the gears off that you can properly clean out the oil holes and tracks. 3rd gear bush relies on the oil getting through as otherwise it will seize on the mainshaft presumably. Just as importantly the oil ways in 4th gear allow oil to get through to the little bush on the nose of the output shaft and inside the input shaft.
Best of luck to anyone else who decides to have a go !!
