Since posting the above plea I realise of course that as I only need the bottom 3 and a half or 4 inches I could easily cut this out any rear back plate and maybe even out of the top bit or even a front back plate in fact. Does anyone have the remains of one which is of no use at all for anything else please ? All offers appreciated. Thanks.
bill2 December 2018 at 09:16 #52949Mike, I suddenly remembered that I actually have some photos of my own Lucas M45 starter motor (when it was off the car) I can send these if it helps you to know what you are looking for. I have tried to attach them to this post but it will only allow me to attach 200KB. I cant work out how to reduce the size of my photos and then post them !
If you would like to have copies of these photos send me a private message and I will then send them to you. There are 3 photos and each is about 600KBbill1 December 2018 at 18:32 #52945Other members may also reply to this but I think you will find that a new armature will be extremely expensive. However there is an alternative starter motor which you can fit – normally used on an XK Jaguar I believe – XK 150 ? Coincidentally it is called a Lucas M45 starter. Here a link to one on EBay at the moment :-

However can someone else confirm that I am correct about this ?bill24 October 2018 at 17:49 #52918These are actually quite easy to make up if you have access to a small lathe. You just need to machine up the little end which inserts (by weld or braze) in the end of a piece of decent thick walled tube. Copy an original if you can get access to one. Doesn’t take too long. Then leave it outside for a couple of months in the winter and it will soon look like an original one !
bill19 October 2018 at 16:45 #52911I believe they also fitted Kigass to certain oldish tractors so spares may be available in that world as well.
bill19 October 2018 at 08:43 #52906In case it helps I have also observed the sort of “frothiness” you refer to in my old M45 and also LG45 gearboxes and I don’t think it is a problem.
In my humble opinion I would have thought that EP90 was a bit thick – particularly when the car was cold.
I have always used engine oil in my T8 and G9 gearboxes and never found any problem.bill2 July 2018 at 17:45 #52836I always used very thick black leather (approx. 4mm or 5mm thick) which you can get from any saddler. It is very hard wearing and you can also trim the edge very easily with a Stanley knife if necessary.

Try Ralph Dukes for the headlamp glass – 01777 705130. He often has “unobtainable” bits although will be expensive. If he does not have anything he may be able to guide you to someone. Usually very helpful. No connection with him except as a (now impoverished) customer !bill18 April 2018 at 19:06 #52746I am reliably informed that apparently this was Derek Green’s original 2 litre that he joined the club with back in the 1970s.
Is it still around in the UK ?bill7 April 2018 at 08:16 #52726To Julian and others, thank you very much for the input.
A shorter steering arm seems to be much the simplest initial step. I didn’t realise that the 2 litre steering arm would be a straight swap !
So the hunt is on ! Anyone know of a spare one which is available ?
Many thanks for the help.bill26 March 2018 at 16:35 #52697Thanks very much for the suggestions , Bill.
I think that the steering column is in good condition as I rebuilt it properly when I rebuilt the car. Only done about 12,000 miles since. However I will just check that. Thank you.
The steering is fantastic once one is moving. It is only the parking and manoeuvring which is the problem for me !
I could of course fit narrower tyres but I would prefer to have as much rubber on the road as possible !bill26 March 2018 at 09:00 #52695Thanks, Mark, very much for the reply.
I definitely do not want to cut the steering column !
I have a vague memory of someone using (or trying to use) something from the power assistance on an underground train door (!!!!) but I may be wrong ! Also someone else possibly using a system from a 1950/60s car. It was electric and could be switched off when on the move.
I am interested in whether someone has actually done a conversion themselves. Otherwise I will have to change my parking habits !
Thanks.bill7 March 2018 at 09:50 #52684Try Orson Equipment of Dudley. telephone 01902 906290.
They make all sorts of hubs and are very helpful I have found.bill6 February 2018 at 14:46 #52655Just to resurrect this thread once again about waterless coolants and the like ….
There have also been other comments elsewhere on this Forum.
Maybe it is worth reading and noting Jonathan Oppenheimer comments in the February Newsletter (just received) about his experiences with “4 Life Coolant”. I do not know the product specifically or the circumstances in which it was used but it would appear to be one of the so called “waterless coolant” varieties.
In my humble opinion do NOT use these products in our old fashioned engines or be prepared for trouble.
If you do use them be prepared for localised overheating of which you will not be aware. This can cause pistons to seize and other problems.
Your temperature gauge (if accurate) only tells you the temperature in the header tank and not elsewhere in the engine.
I was assured by a very well qualified modern automotive cooling engineer (working for a large well know car company) that nothing is better than ordinary water for cooling – although maybe add a little antifreeze/corrosion protection.
Any alternatives views, experiences or comments welcome ! -
