It does look very nice in the photos – maybe I was being a bit harsh.
I find the sellers descriptions very amusing for these kind of cars, they normally start like this; ‘Lagonda Rapide L###/R was sold to a Mr John Smith III of the ‘such and such’ trading company in 1963 after which it passed into the venerable hands of Sgt… who lovingly cherised and daily polished it etc etc.’ All written in the style of a historic factual document about a significant artifact.
Any other car and it would be; ‘This Lagonda Rapide has been fully restored, comes with a full history and is in excellent conditon etc etc’.
Am I rambling…I’ll get my coat.
Christian20 December 2011 at 08:21 #48637Hi Guy, did you reverse the polarity yourself? I’ve done it to another car by touching the live wire against the body of the dynamo – very easy! My reservation with the Rapide is the rev counter and other electronic gauges – did you have a problem with these?
You could always refit the original dynamo at a later stage if you wanted. Fitting an alternator should be easy as the Rapide already has a thin belt compatible with most modern alternators – not sure if the control box needs to be adapted as well?
Christian16 December 2011 at 09:41 #48629Hi Guy, thanks for the info, I will be very interested to hear how your conversion goes and how it feels and performs afterwards. I am suprised that the DB4/5 and Rapide did not have it fitted considering it has power brakes, windows and fuel cap, even the Rover P5b had PAS in 1958. I think I would be tempted to have the same upgrade added, especially as it is quite close…we’ll see…
Christian12 December 2011 at 09:56 #48619Thanks David, do you think it’s a bit wimpish to add PAS?
Christian11 December 2011 at 23:52 #48617Hi Jay, any idea roughly how much the PAS conversion was? It’s certainly worth doing on a Rapide…though I havn’t driven it yet, but I have lifted the engine out!
Christian8 December 2011 at 23:05 #48614If you are paying a reputable dealer then I think in the region of ?3-5K to retrofit electronic PAS – someone else may need to confirm. You can fit exactly the same PAS system yourself if you do the right research and know what you are doing for next to nothing, I’m sure AM specialists file the GM logo off their hardware… 😉
Not sure about the alternator conversion – shouldn’t be more than ?150 as it’s a very simple job and the alterator is a cheap part – probably cost ?1000 if done by an AM specialist.
You may need to reverse the polarity of the car for both of the above jobs (if not done already) – no problem apart from some of your instruments might suffer.
Christian5 December 2011 at 15:57 #48609Aston Martin Dorset supplied me the missing link for ?10 – bargain!
Christian4 December 2011 at 21:23 #48607Mine are two vents like the front but much wider with the blower in the middle (round vent). The material on mine is vinyl.
Christian26 November 2011 at 19:39 #48583Thanks for looking, I’d like original if possible but will resort to a new rod if I have to. This is what I’m after – see below:
Christian18 November 2011 at 22:31 #48562Yes, I would like to see this also, though I don’t think I will alter mine as it’s original to my car. Having said that I would like the challenge but I think it would involved the moulding, or fine painting of a small piece of red plastic?
A good radio off eBay is around ?200…
Christian13 November 2011 at 17:25 #48551I have my originals but the inner hub caps are poor – the outer would polish up. TVJL did have a spare set….? These are typical of the ones I have;

Christian13 November 2011 at 17:12 #48550Mine has a Motorola 707 (or 717T see below) which is original to my car. They do turn up on eBay every so often – like here…
Christian8 November 2011 at 22:22 #48543Last phase of carb rebuild – new gaskets, main jets, diaphrams.
Christian3 November 2011 at 16:59 #48532Good to hear of another Rapide, would you mind telling us a bit more about it, a photo would be great!
