What is the hammer for? – no eared spinners on a Rapide…

Sadly all I have is the original jack (with tags) and spinner tool, do you have anything? I’m guessing the kit is the same as the DB4 kit?

Hi Mark, the caps on mine are brass so fortunately have survived, original new ones are available on eBay for ?50 each – click here to see.

I was very pleased with my new bumpers, they have my old ones which they will probably be using as a template for yours. I got the badge bar holes removed on my new bumpers.

I’m fairly sure the pipe runs are original with the exception of one. The only bodging I have really seen involves zip ties and the lid of a tobacco tin…and a cider cork (circa 1965).

Yes Mr Bodger has beeen in there, but fortunately Mr Bodger is a lazy chap who hasn’t managed to do too much damage – most of the internals haven’t seen anyone for nearly 50 years.

The corroded aluminium component is wierd, never seen one before – it’s just a housing which hold the pedal pivot pin and master cylinder… Just about to start restoring all these parts so photos will follow. Would love to know how the pipes should go…

Good idea, make sure there are a few questions about obsolete part numbers…

Thanks Peter, sorry you have to deal with these things!

Thanks for the reply Guy. The original speaker (which is not that original) has totally had it so I may install a good quality single speaker to keep it looking original. I think I will use it as a sub only (this sounds very boy racery!) so the quality is not so important. I’m not massively keen on door speakers where there were none as it will involve cutting the door cards, I may go for the footwell side panels as one already has a speaker. I managed to get another chrome AM grill so they should look original…

How have you got on with your PHH44’s?

Thanks David, the one I removed used the vinyl folded round to stop vibration – may try the same method. I was thinking earlier (while stripping out bits and pieces) that I will make sure I place lots of felt at pinch points around the interior to avoid sqeeks and rattles…

It’s been a heck of a job fabricating the new parcel shelf to the exact spec as the original and using all of the original brackets and fittings – I’m on my second attempt already! Fortunately I have a good supply of quality ply of every size and thinkness to see me through this restoration…

It may seem odd the way I’m renovating the car but I’m simply restoring parts as they are removed to reduce the risk of me forgetting how things go together and to avoid components going missing…

    Hello Michael

I was very interested to read your post about your Rapide, the modifications you have made and your latest acquisitions. It is also interesting to hear your opinion on the Rapide, as someone who has owned one from nearly new.

I am currently restoring my Rapide feel that I am slowly getting familiar with the car. My radio is original but does not have the illuminated ‘Lagonda’ badge (‘M’ instead), so I’m slightly jealous! The interior of your Rapide looks very nice is it original or has it been re-upholstered?

I would love to see a picture of your engine bay if that was possible…

    Kind regards, Christian

Sorry, I can’t give any useful guidence as to why one of your 44’s is flooding when going downhill. My knowlegde of these carbs is theoretical and I know how to rebuild them. I assume as you let you foot off the accelerator the carbs are not restricting the fuel flow adequately, the float chamber valve?

Personnally I would not change them to SU’s as when working correctly I believe they are very reliable. I also think that they’re one of the distinctive parts of the Rapide which set it apart from the rest.

John is very helpful and should give you free postage if you buy two kits like I did – cheaper than eBay! It’s worth mentioning that you do not get idle jets or throttle shaft seals with the modern kits – these must be purchased seperately.

On mine it is called ‘SPARE’. I think the previous owner used it for the electric aerial…
