    Hi Laurence,

    Thanks for your comments.

I might try an engine flush next time although I last changed the oil after just 1,500 miles and it was still in really good condition so I was probably being over-cautious anyway. I?ll do the next one after another 2,500 miles and see what it?s like. I take your point about residue.

I?d still be interested to hear other people?s views if they want to join the discussion.

Interesting that the moly additive did nothing but it sounds as if you had/have a very specific problem with oil consumption that the moly products possibly aren?t really claiming to help with. 100mpg oil consumption!! WOW! I?m glad the Redex has bought that down to manageable levels.

In hadn?t considered the moly products for being used in engines. The one I?ve seen was specifically for gearboxes and axles. As I mentioned in my original post, I suspect they?re not of great benefit. A good modern oil, changed regularly, must surely be sufficient.

    An interesting topic.

I?m not sure the later pushrods are reliable in service. One of mine bent at the point where the tube diameter reduces. David Hine tells me that the longer pushrods reliably bend if the engine is taken to 4,500rpm too quickly.

The later pushrods are not only longer and have thinner tubes but the ends are swagged to fit the machined ball and cup ends. These reduced diameter swagged ends seem to be a weakness to me.

Is there any reason why the tubes can?t stay the same diameter along their whole length and the machined ends simply insert as an interference fit?

There?s no clearance issues as far as I can see.

I certainly wouldn?t have enjoyed printing and posting 22,000 cards. And I doubt my daughter would have been seen for dust!

Your right though. We should be open to new ideas and encourage suggestions from our members. It?s their club and not the committees after all.

Just a brief note of thanks to those that made it along to the Woodman at Ide Hill yesterday. What a terrific afternoon. We had 5 Lagonda?s and a 1914 Woolsley. Some great chat and a good opportunity to open bonnets and inspect each other?s oily moving parts.

I will post some photos when I?ve worked out how to reduce the file sizes.

Another member suggested that perhaps a new card each year would be a nice idea and there was quite a bit of debate at committee level. It was decided to put it to the members to vote and the majority of those that did, voted in favour. So that?s why we have them.

What?s their purpose and who do you show it to? Good question.

With about 1/3 of members residing outside of the UK and with limited access to UK events or connecting with other members I suspect that they might like receiving a card each year. Something else connecting them to the club. It?s early days but I?ve already received quite a number of positive comments from members within the UK (such as Richard] so there is clearly some appeal. Personally, I like receiving membership cards from my various clubs but appreciate that there?s little appeal for some. Stephen and Colin you are obviously in that camp and there will be plenty of others I am sure.

The paper card shows membership number but the annual plastic ones also serves as a reminder of subscription renewal date. Colin has a hard job chasing up membership fees each year and perhaps the cards may help people remember when subs are due.

The picture on the card is the featured model of car at this years annual gathering. The car on the cards will change each year to celebrate that years featured car.

I have also been trying to drum up discounts for members with various suppliers and you will notice the discount codes on the cards reverse. Having these in one place seemed helpful and I will continue to petition suppliers to support this campaign. Any suggestions welcome. Participating suppliers may wish to see a membership card as proof. We will see.

Finally, this is an experiment and I think it?s good that we try the odd new initiative every now and then to freshen things up. This is not an expensive process. The club has bought the printer and blank cards and I produced the cards myself with the help of my daughter. This was the cheapest method and most data secure. We will monitor feedback and I suggest we should let it run for at last 3 years and then review with another member ballot. But that decision is obviously not mine – it?s just a suggestion.

I hope this helps explain the initiative.

    Thanks Bill.

I now have a sample of both lengths of pushrods so will draw them up properly so that we?ve records. I?ll get prices and then they should be available through the club.

    Hi Charles,

Glad you’ve got the discs. I hope you’ve also got the back plates and all the other bits and pieces as well because they are quite hard to find. Amazing really when you consider how many have been removed over the years. I always expect the auto-jumbles to be overflowing with the things!

Would be good to see the car in September if you can make it.

    Best wishes,

    David

    Hi Charles,

Welcome to the club. I?ve had a look at the photos of your car on the gallery. What a stunning car it is.

I notice that it has a correct wheel disc on the spare. Having had these made for my LG45 I?ve experience of these so if you decide you want some for the rest of the wheels I may be able to save you some time.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress. You?ll find a wealth of valuable support and knowledge on this forum.

The incidentally, the LG6 and V12?s are our featured models for our annual gathering later this year. I hope you can make it.

Your workshop must be heated if you?re working on your car at the moment Barry. We?re visiting Toronto to see the Leafs play the Habs in April so have been following the weather. Living in an area surrounded by water I imagine it?s pretty chilly where you are.

    Barry,

Guest, Keen and Nettlefolds made bolts for years. Still do I think. There’s lots of info online but I’m going to have to let you read it to see if this sheds any light on the matter. I hope this helps. https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/GKN

    Dear Bazza,

The scroll cam the club offer is currently undergoing a very comprehensive design and manufacturing design check. It’s a complex helical scroll and the peg that engages with it carries enormous load on these heavy cars.play in the peg shaft also affects the contact point with the scroll so you would be advised to check this as well. It could be some time before they have stocks.

    Good luck in your quest.

This is my understanding and please correct me if I’m wrong.
High compression engines burn fuel much more cleanly. An unclean burn is an inefficient burn – hence more wasted energy in the form of heat.
High compression engines need to be much more accurately set up for ignition timing and correct fuel/air mixture because under higher compression combustion can begin before a spark is generated giving a much narrower ignition timing window.
Incidentally, when I bought my car it had a decompression plate fitted – presumably so that it could run on poor quality fuel available during and after the war.

Hi Bill, sounds like you’ve found a cheap fix for your steering wheel. I’d like to see pictures.
Click on the ‘manage attachments’ link and follow instructions. You may need to reduce the file size. If you can’t manage it you could email them to me and I’ll upload them for you.
