I don’t know the chap (Dylan) at all. ?245,000 is a keen price. From the photographs (it’s up on the website now), the car looks to be in very good condition, although why (for goodness sake) hasn’t someone put back the hubcaps?
NB I see that they have (in fact) put up an image of the build sheet with the original engine number (101) crossed out and 137 inserted in manuscript (which chimes with engine 101 being in our car, 137). The interesting thing about 101, of course, is that it’s the only Rapide engine with 3.7 litre displacement, rather than the standard 4 litre.
TVJL28 October 2017 at 17:28 #52534It’s advertised for sale again with Dylan Miles (not on the website but advertised in this month’s AM Quarterly).
I wonder if the seller is going to tell interested parties that his engine is in our car? 😆
TVJL27 September 2017 at 19:10 #52486Don’t forget the additional ?600 vat too. 😉 Thus, the grand total paid by someone for this treasure was ?33,600.
TVJL26 September 2017 at 22:37 #52484Interesting thoughts, chaps. From what you say, it seems that the engine numbers were applied in Staines rather than Wolverhampton? If that’s right, and this was a ‘float’ engine as you suggest (which seems an entirely logical premise to me), the proposition explains why there is no chassis number included (of course).
However, I’m still a little unclear as to why (or even how) an LG6 float engine came to be stamped up as an S3? No matter how long it had been hanging around in the stores, it’s stamped as an LG6 despite ending up in an S3 LG45. Assuming that it had no engine number at all stamped on it prior to use, and that it had indeed been upgraded from S3 to S4 spec., why give it an LG6 prefix and yet an S3 suffix?
TVJL17 September 2017 at 23:18 #52476Hi Colin,
Interesting thoughts. However, does this analysis explain (a) the suffix ‘S3’, or (b) the absence of the chassis number?

TVJL9 August 2017 at 21:07 #52447Colin, that has to be one of my favourite forum posts of all time. Loved it. Thank you.
Atb, Tim
PS Is it Okay to love them all (pre- and post-war)?
TVJL28 July 2017 at 01:44 #52430This car is still an interesting prospect for someone. Personally, I love the post war cars every bit as much as the pre-war ones.

That’s priceless. 😆
TVJL10 January 2017 at 23:05 #52242Hi Tim,
Thanks for posting. I haven’t received a PM from you but I’ve sent you one.

TVJL8 January 2017 at 18:58 #52231Postscript :
I may just be hopeless at eBay searching. However, I have tried various combinations of search and can find no reference using various combinations of key words ‘Lagonda’ and ‘crankcase’ and ‘LG45’ / ‘M45’.
TVJL8 January 2017 at 18:45 #52230HI Bill,
Thanks for the eBay listing recovery tips – I’ll try them. Thanks also for the ‘heads up’ on your email (found, spam folder).
Atb,
Tim
TVJL7 January 2017 at 16:42 #52228Well, I can’t see it listed on eBay, Bill. Did you happen save a link to it by any chance? (I don’t know how to find ‘old’ eBay listings as some people seem able to dredge up somehow.)
TVJL7 January 2017 at 11:17 #52226I missed that Bill, damn it.
Re you question, I’m no kind of expert. However, I think that the crankcase may well be different. On the LC website, reference the new blocks, it is said;
“Lagonda upgraded this cylinder block several times during the years following its introduction in 1933. In particular, the method of fixing it to the crankcase was progressively strengthened. In order to be sure that we send you the correct configuration for your car (which may have been altered since it was new), please contact the Spares Officer, who will send you details of the exact information that we require.”
I do not need a new block for my latest project. But, ….
Regards,
Tim
