Hi, I need a new set of tyres for the 16/80. Age has got the better of them, planning this summer to put some proper miles on them, so time to change them. Currently they are what has been described as “budget tyres”, Excelsior 550×18.
Having had a call around the usual suspects, the correct “look” would be the 3 stud pattern. We currently have a Alvis Special that is running Blockley 650×19, it is on the track quite a lot, as well as dirt roads and these tyres have stood up and performed well, although a bit whiny on smooths services.
What is everyone one using or preferring / recommending?

All the benefits of radials, but, crucially, the dimensions and appearance of period crossplies. They certainly make them in a size to suit the V12 and LG6, so quite likely for the 16/80. Only downside is … they aren’t cheap! They should however last far longer than crossplies. I think North Hants Tyres are the only UK suppliers; Longstone don’t stock as they erroneously presume Excelsior radials are as bad as their crossplies.

I replaced them with Michelin DR (Double Rivet) from Vintage Tyres Beaulieu and they transformed the ride of the car. Could be because they were new but I suspect it’s because they are better quality tyres. I like the look of them too.
