Before anyone says anything; my dhc was originally fitted with 4 carbs. It was Alan Good’s personal car, & his driver told me the 4 carb set-up was replaced by the standard 2 carb arrangement when he sold it.
The rebuild is nearly finished, but Mel Cranmer, who is doing the work, just fits a gauze mesh over the intakes for his Le Mans V12s. I’d prefer something more substantial than that, and wonder if anyone knows what air filter/silencer arrangement was fitted to factory 4 carb cars, other than the Le Mans ones? I know the 2 carb arrangement is simply a silencer. Would also be interested to see how others have dealt with this. I suspect the intake noise from 4 large carburettors will be unacceptable without something in place!

    Dear Laurence,
I have only the 2 carb settup and the flat air filter housing is missing. Instead I found these nice brass suction trumpets in the car when I bought it and I am using them, so there is no air filter at all in my car. Suction noise is not a problem and the carburettors are well accessible this way. I know that others have cut a modern air filter and put it in the flat housing. Which certainly restricts air flow a bit. For me the decision was easy, and as long as you are not driving on dusty roads (Peking-Paris or similar) or 30000 miles per year I assume this should be ok. Earlier Lagondas did not have air filters either. I assume the 4-carb cars as the sports version (Le Mans cars, Rapides and a few others) did never have even the flat air filter/silencer housing.

    Hi Peter,
Mine had the original Burgess flat air silencer …., it wasn’t a filter, so perhaps I shouldn’t worry too much. I might see if two of the Burgess air silencers could be fitted, perhaps with some modification.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone knows if originally,4-carb non Le Mans V12s had any sort of silencer, filter, or even trumpets such as yours.

Lawrence, I can send you photos of the original flashbacks (they are neither a silencer nor filter) as factory-fitted to our 4 carb Rapide engine. However it will take me a day or two.
    Mark.
