Where can I buy the correct oil for my ’28 box & rear axle?

Should I consider changing the oil type?

    Thanks

No clean is out and use SAE 30 on the gearbox and EP 90 for the back axle.

If you suspect castor oil has been used, smell it and I suggest you wash the gearbox/axle with real turpentine – not white spirit.

The biggest worry is lubrication of the layshaft bearing in the gearbox.

Agreed with Colin – but you will need to clean it out really well.
If you have ever seen the results of castor oil having been left static in an axle, gearbox or engine over a long period of time you would never want to use it again – despite its lubricating properties !

    Hi Steve,
Interestingly I asked the same question nearly 20 years ago. The reply came from Phil Ridout who wrote the Lagonda 2 Litre Gearbox Manual available from the club and a ‘must have’ as it also deals with clutch adjustment and oils.
Phil told me that he preferred EP90 in his gearbox and rear axle
But I also know of longstanding members who swear by SAE30 or classic 20/50 engine oil for the gearbox and EP140 for the rear axle (20/50 and EP140 being my preference but both units were stripped and cleaned during rebuild).
The late Phil Ridout also told me over afternoon tea….” you will find many different opinions coming from Lagonda owners, listen to them all and then make your own mind up”
However, one thing on which everyone agrees is… stay with Castrol R if you have it in your gearbox and axle (early cars often did) or deep clean before changing to any other non vegetable oil.
Classic Oils at Bicester Heritage provided good service to me last year.
    Hope this helps
    Best Regards
    Mark
